Restoration style 6-light chandelier with old gold finish
Superb 6-light bronze chandelier, whose splendour, gilding and satinised glass globes perfectly embody the spirit and style of the Restoration period. The chandelier is composed of 6 U-shaped arms, each decorated with a gilded plant spiral, reminiscent of a young fern shoot rolled up on itself, arranged around a central thread, part of which is left bronze coloured, contrasting beautifully with the old gold patina finish of the rest of the chandelier. The basins at the end of the arms each have a large satin glass ball and a clear glass cylinder, which at the time allowed a candle to be threaded into the ball. Note the details of the mouldings on the basins and the ceiling rose to which the golden pendant chain is attached.
As the heir to a Parisian bronze workshop that has been in operation since the 19th century, Lucien Gau demonstrates year after year the exceptional craftsmanship that has been built up and handed down from generation to generation, both in restoration and conservation and in the reproduction of light fittings using techniques faithful to the period in which they originated.
